2011 - Greatest Year for Movies... Ever?

I started browsing through IMDB tonight and I noticed movie after movie coming up this year that I want to see... and not just, "hey, I think I might see that"... more like, "HOLY CRAP! THAT LOOKS AWESOME!"

So hear's my list of the top 10 movies that I REALLY want to see this year...
  1. Thor
    • I've written about this one on the site before.  I really can't stress enough how cool this movie is going to be.  Given the people that are involved I really have the highest of hopes for it.
  2. Green Lantern
    • I was skeptical at first.  I really didn't see how they would pull this one off effectively.  Given the scope of the character in the DC Universe and how big of a property the Green Lantern has become I really wondered if this would end up as a huge disappointment... especially after they cast Ryan Reynolds.  Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but I just didn't see him having the screen presence to pull off Hal Jordan.  Then I saw the trailer... it looks like they got it dead on and it looks REALLY good!
  3. Captain America: The First Avenger
    • Come on!  It's finally a Cap' movie with a good budget and creative team behind it.  Throw in Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull and I am SOLD!
      • Sadly, no trailer yet...
  4. Red State
    • If you haven't heard anything about this one let me enlighten you.  Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, etc.) decided to go completely back to his indie roots and make a freakin' horror movie! So far he's marketed it almost entirely on Twitter and is planning the first public screening of the film at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.  Buzz around it is high and this may be the one that finally gets the naysayers to shut the hell up.
  5. Paul
    • Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wrote and star in this geektastic road trip movie about two British comic book nerds who come to America to see Area 51.  What they find is a real alien named... Paul (voiced by Seth Rogan).  This should be interesting as I am a big fan of both Pegg and Frost (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are probably two of the best comedies to of the last 10 years).  This time that are not being directed by Edgar Wright, but Greg Mattola who gave us Superbad, a movie that I thought was funny, but as funny as most everyone else I know thought it was.
  6. Rango
    • I will freely admit that I barely noticed the posters for this film when they first started to pop up on movie sites a couple of months ago.  The other night I finally saw the trailer for it and it looks fantastic.  The animation looks amazing and the voice acting sounds like it's top notch and I'm really hoping that they didn't show us all the good parts in the trailer...
  7. The Rite
  8. Priest
    • Based on the uber-violent Korean Manga of the same name Priest is hopefully going to be more than just gap filler given that there is no Resident Evil movie coming out this year.  I've read the Manga and from what I understand they have made some changes that are causing a fair amount of squawking in the fan communities.  I'm hopeful that it will still be worth the money to see it.
  9. Source Code
    • Jake Gyllenhaal has consistently turned in great performances in just about everything he's been in.  This time he's been paired with Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan in a thriller surrounding the terrorist bombing of a commuter train in Chicago.  The premise is that he is a soldier on a mission to discover who was behind the bombing by tapping into the last memories of a business man who was on the train... a nice cyberpunk touch.
  10. Cowboys and Aliens
    • The title alone should be enough for most people to sit up and take notice just given it's relative absurdity.  Then when you look at the people working on it there should be no doubt that it has all the potential in the world to rock the house... Directed by John Favreau and Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Sam Rockwell... come on, this has WIN written all over it!
... and here's a quick break down of the runners up list.  These just didn't quite make the cut...
  • The Mechanic
  • I am Number Four
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
  • The Green Hornet
  • X-Men: First Class
  • Sucker Punch
  • The Tree of Life
  • Battle: Los Angeles
  • Unknown
  • Cars 2
  • The Smurfs
  • The Eagle
  • Hanna
